Does smoking Mary J have an impact on acne prone skin?

In this day and age, it has become increasingly common to encounter clients who use marijuana, whether for medical reasons or recreational purposes. It's important to note that marijuana does, in fact, have an impact on the skin.

Smoking can cause fluctuations in hormone levels by first raising and then lowering testosterone, which can complicate the process of clearing acne. Another concern is that THC, the active component in cannabis, often leads to a strong appetite and reduced inhibitions, commonly known as the “munchies.” There’s a significant link between high glycemic index foods and acne, and these are the types of foods most often consumed under the influence of THC-heavy cannabis. Additionally, overconsumption of THC can lead to stress and anxiety for some people, and that spike in stress can trigger acne inflammation.

So, what do I recommend?

1. Stock up on healthy snacks: Having better options available can help reduce the temptation to indulge in high glycemic foods.
2. Moderation is key: Being mindful of your consumption can help minimize its effects on your skin.
3. Consider cleaner methods: If you typically smoke joints or blunts, try alternatives like edibles or cartridges. Smoke exposure, especially from blunts and papers, releases carbon monoxide, which is full of free radicals that can wreak havoc on your skin.

It’s my responsibility to inform you that certain lifestyle choices can be a roadblock in clearing your acne. While I won’t pressure you to quit, if we’re doing everything else right and still hitting a brick wall, it might be a topic we need to revisit later.
